"Train Hard" Stack

“Best Products. Best Value. Best Service.”

True to this promise at Mid 10, we are constantly looking for ways to provide our customers the best products in the industry at the top value.  Knowing that it sometimes takes multiple supplements to assist with certain goals, we developed our first six product “stacks” to be released this summer.  These stacks provide all the essentials for a specific goal/lifestyle, and take the guesswork out of pairing products for best results.  The best part… all stack purchases save you $50 of hard earned cash off our guaranteed lowest prices in the country.

The Scoop:

This month’s product spotlight features our “Train Hard” stack. Simply put, this stack was created with one goal in mind: improve performance.  Casual workout folks need not apply – this is for those looking to push the envelope to achieve a new PR or physique milestone.  Weekend warriors, crossfitters, bodybuilders, power lifters and many other athletes can benefit from this mix of supplements designed to intensify workouts, increase endurance, and aid recovery.

In order to maximize potential results, the “Train Hard” stack takes a three-pronged approach.  The first piece of the “Train Hard” stack is the pre-workout component to help promote workout intensity. Ingredients that support energy and endurance lead to better training sessions and faster gains in strength and tone. Piece two of the stack (post-workout) supports serious recovery by providing the body with optimal sources of protein and carbohydrates to damaged muscle.  These products “ignite” the repair process and help the body heal quickly and prepare for the next workout.   The last – but certainly not least – part of the stack is fundamental nutrition. This includes essential fats, nutrients, and amino acids that help the body function at peak potential.  Key performance benefits include reduced inflammation, improved joint mobility, and a healthier heart.

Built with these three components in mind, we’re confident the “Train Hard” stack will provide you with the absolute best supplement combination for intense workouts.  Mention this blog in the store and we’ll let you try the products for your next workout on us.  It will change the way you train.

The Science:

Pre-Workout: Kre-Ex, one of our top selling pre-workouts, provides a strong yet smooth energy blend from caffeine and yerba mate. While these ingredients provide the drive and focus to get in the gym, they are not what make this product unique. Kre-Ex is loaded with over 16 grams (more than 3x the average pre-workout drink) of active ingredients to deliver enhanced workout performance.  These include a buffered creatine complex, beta-alanine, and L-arginine AKG.  Kre-Ex also does not use a proprietary blend, so the user knows they are getting full dosages of the important ingredients outlined below.

1) The buffered creatine used in Kre-Ex is Magna Power which is a magnesium creatine chelate. Benefits of using creatine include increased strength and enhanced glycogen levels. Creatine, when taken, combines with phosphate to form creatine phosphate that leads to rapid energy production.1 This increased level of energy has shown to improve anaerobic power output and maximal strength.2

2) Beta-alanine is a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid that is converted in the body and utilized in muscle processes. Beta-alanine acts as a buffer to lactic acid formation helping to increase endurance and prevent muscle fatigue. Studies have shown that beta-alanine can enhance the effectiveness of creatine when taken in conjunction.3

3) L-arginine AKG plays a critical role in several protein syntheses, and one of its most important roles in the human body is for the biosynthesis of nitric oxide (NO). NO triggers blood vessel dilation and increases blood flow. The increased blood flow helps to slow lactic acid build-up resulting in less soreness after workouts. One notable study showed L-arginine AKG supplementation improved one-rep press performance and peak power output when compared with a placebo.4

Recovery: Post workout protein (Phormula-1) and carbohydrate (Ignition) intake is essential to quick recovery after high intensity training. Not only does protein help repair muscle tissue, but also, protein supplementation paired with creatine intake has shown positive results in muscle gains.5 Phormula-1 is a whey protein isolate which is protein that is hydrolyzed into smaller fragments. These smaller protein chains are more efficiently assimilated and digested in your body allowing for faster muscle repair.

Ignition provides a clean, rapid source of carbohydrates to help replenish muscle glycogen that is depleted during exercise. Ingesting liquid carbohydrates after intense workouts promotes rapid restoration of glycogen levels6 and helps to avoid energy crashes and exhaustion. Positive benefits of carbohydrate supplementation have been seen in studies where performance and exercise capacity were increased over time.Ignition takes this one step further by adding a powdered blend of vitamins and minerals to replace those lost during training.

Fundamental Nutrition: While the focus of the “Train Hard” stack is on the pre- and post-workout nutrition, the anti-inflammatory benefits of a quality Omega-3 supplement cannot be overlooked. Lipo-N3, a high potency salmon oil, provides the essential fatty acids (EFAs) necessary to combat joint wear and improve mobility.8 Beyond this, EFAs have been shown to improve key facets of cardiovascular health.  To read more about EFAs, read our blog post about what makes EFA’s so critical for performance: http://mid10nutrition.blogspot.com/2012/03/part-2-efas.html.

Sport Formula

The Scoop:

Sport Formula is a raw, cold-processed vitamin powder that provides essential nutrients to help with energy, strength, and recovery.  Each serving is sealed fresh with a blend of vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids, and digestive enzymes.  Unlike tablet multivitamins that have shown to have a very poor absorption rate, Sport Formula can be mixed in your drink or taken under the tongue for fast delivery to the bloodstream and vitamins you can actually feel.

The Science:

Why vitamins?: While disease prevention studies in regards to multivitamins have shown varied results, the research regarding multivitamin use and improved exercise performance shows a strong correlation between the two.  Out of eleven human clinical trials conducted from the 1940’s to 1990’s, seven showed an improved performance outcome in the multivitamin group vs. placebo [1].  In addition, several studies support the positive effects of multivitamins on factors such as mental health, immunity, and injury recovery, which can be indirectly linked to performance improvement.

More generally, vitamins help to convert food into energy to fuel your workout, race, or game. Specific raw vitamins help with processing protein which is also fundamental to getting stronger and improving recovery.  While our goal is to obtain as many of these vitamins from whole food as possible, the challenge for active individuals is meeting increased demands with today’s Western diet.

Why raw, cold-processed?  Although vitamin supplements are needed to meet nutrient needs, many vitamins and essential amino acid products are denatured with heat when being processed and created. To increase absorbency of the raw Sport Formula vitamins, the powder is cold processed which best allows the vitamins to remain in a raw and digestible form for our bodies.

Pill vs. Powder? When it comes to multivitamins, it is not the amount of vitamin that you take, but rather the amount you absorb that really matters.  A popular statistic from the Physician’s Desk Reference (2010) suggests that hard tablets or pills may have an absorption rate as little as 18% vs. a powder/liquid at 98%.  Many cheap one-per-day tablet vitamins have an additional preservative coating that may further limit uptake.  The true absorption rate of pills is largely based off of the quality and makeup of the pill, but by choosing a powder or liquid, you can rest assured that you are getting what you pay for.

Although not an exact science, this home test (https://www.consumerlab.com/results/hometest.asp) from Consumer labs is a quick and easy way to mimic the breakdown of your tablet multivitamin and see if you are getting what you paid for!

Why Sport Formula? Sport Formula powder is an active potency multivitamin plus essential amino acids, minerals, and digestive enzymes.  The product packaging was created with convenience in mind. The individualized packet will melt in your mouth without water making it easy to take on-the-go.  Sport Formula is naturally sweetened with Xylitol (fruit sweetener) and tastes great!

This month's Product Spotlight would be a great addition for anyone looking to increase overall health naturally and organically -- Divine Health's Living Green Superfood!

Living Green Superfood

Do you get your recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day? Do you eat a wide variety of raw, plant-based foods to get a broad spectrum of nutrients each day? If you answered “no” to either of these questions (as all of us at Mid10 certainly did!), then Divine Health’s Living Green Superfood could be just what your diet needs to facilitate optimum overall health!

THE SCOOP

Living Green Superfood is a powdered blend of concentrated, certified organic greens, fruits, vegetables, digestive enzymes, and pre- and pro-biotics.  Living Green’s ingredients are intended to balance the body’s pH levels, strengthen the immune system, increase energy naturally, improve digestion, and support eye and liver health -- and that’s just to name a few of the benefits! We know what you might be thinking…This sounds great and all, but it MUST taste terrible!  However, Living Green Superfood is sweetened with organic Stevia (a natural, plant-based, zero- calorie sweetener) and cinnamon, so it tastes great! Don’t believe us? Come try a sample!

THE SCIENCE

Antioxidants
Some of the most exciting research in the last decade has been the discovery of a group of nutrients, which have protective effects against cell oxidation. These naturally occurring compounds are called antioxidants, and they are found in many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants defend our bodies by scavenging harmful free radicals, which are implicated in most degenerative diseases. Epidemiological studies have established a positive correlation between the intake of fruits and vegetables and prevention of diseases like atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, in addition to the visible effects of ageing (1). Living Green Superfood is great for anyone who struggles getting in their recommended fruits and vegetables each day, as 1 scoop provides 5 servings of fruits and veggies to supplement the antioxidants your diet lacks, and in a convenient powdered form!

Enzymes
There are many benefits to raw foods that we miss out on day-to-day, as we consume foods which have been highly processed before reaching our plates. For example, most uncooked foods contain enough enzymes (the catalysts all cells require to survive and function) to allow for easy digestion. When the food is cooked, however, those enzymes become deactivated (denatured) and can no longer assist in the digestive process upon consumption (2). Therefore, our body’s enzyme-making machinery must work double-time in order to break down this food, often halting other metabolic functions. Using too much of our enzyme potential to produce digestive enzymes limits our ability to produce metabolic enzymes. This can make us more susceptible to disease and cause a general weakening of the body’s ability to mend itself. Therefore, supplementing digestive enzymes with the Living Green Superfood can aid in restoring optimal immune function and digestion!

At Mid10 we call the Living Green Superfood a whole-food powdered multi-vitamin, as it contains the antioxidants and enzymes our bodies need to function most efficiently -- and all derived directly from living foods. The Green Superfood is also convenient – throw it in your breakfast smoothie or shake it up with water and you’re good to go! Still unsure? Come by and try it for yourself!

This month's Product Spotlight is our newest metabolism boosting pack -- 1st Phorm's BMR GO PACK. Read on for all the info and don't forget to come by Mid 10 and try a free sample!

BMR GO PACK

 The Scoop

Whether your goal is to lose 50 pounds or shed your last 5, our newest metabolism boosting pack – 1st Phorm’s new BMR Go Pack – can help you attack your weight loss from every angle. The Go Pack is designed to help burn body fat by stimulating the thyroid, encouraging deep sleep, and controlling appetite – all while giving you a smooth energy to power through your day. Plus, 1st Phorm offers the Go Pack in a men’s specific formula: BMR Commander, and a women’s specific formula: BMR Bliss.

How Does it Work?

The Go Pack includes three products to promote optimal metabolism 24-hours a day.

1) BMR Commander for Men: The BMR Commander is 1st Phorm’s newest fat-burner and appetite suppressant, intended to help you take “command” of your metabolism! The Commander is specially formulated to increase the number of calories your body can use, while also fighting off salty and sweet cravings and helping eliminate stored body fat.  The Commander uses the highest quality natural ingredients, therefore allowing for a smooth, no-jitters energy during the day.

BMR Bliss for Women: The BMR Bliss, like the Commander, helps increase your natural energy and focus, AND curbs your cravings for junk food snacks. But there’s more! We all know that weight loss can be difficult when our hormones are working against us. Therefore, in addition to the ingredients found in the Commander, the Bliss also includes a female-specific hormone-balancing complex. For women this means taming symptoms of PMS and minimizing water-retention.

2) Thyro-Drive: A sluggish Thyroid leads to a sluggish metabolism. Thyro-Drive helps combat less-than-optimal thyroid function by boosting your T3 and T4 levels – naturally. T3 (1) and T4 (2) are the predominant and most potent hormones produced by the thyroid, which aid in converting oxygen and calories into usable energy, and therefore burning calories. In addition, increasing your T3 and T4 can lead to not only an increase in metabolism, but also a natural increase in energy!

3) Downtime PM: If you haven’t already heard, at Mid 10 we are big proponents of getting enough sleep. Why? Studies connect lack of sleep to increased cortisol levels, a signal to your body to store body fat and increase appetite. Downtime helps you get deeper and more restful sleep, therefore decreasing cortisol and naturally increasing metabolism – without making you feel groggy when you wake up. Below you will find a more detailed article on the fat-loss benefits of Downtime!

The Mid 10 staff has been trialing the Go Pack ever since it arrived, and the vote is unanimous – we love it! Here are our reviews: 1) The all-day energy and focus come with no jitters or crash; 2) The appetite suppressant eliminates over-eating and snacking; and 3) The Downtime has us sleeping deep and waking rested and refreshed. According to 1st Phorm “It’s hard to explain how great you’ll feel…you have to experience it for yourself!” So stop by Mid 10 for your free sample!

Downtime PM

The Scoop

Most know that a healthy diet can make or break training potential; however, an equally important ingredient for maximizing recovery and results often goes overlooked: sleep. If we want to make the most of our hard work in the gym, we need 8 hours of deep, restful sleep -- not the tossing-and-turning-all-night kind we are all so accustomed to. 1st Phorm's latest release, Downtime PM, is designed to optimize our "downtime" by  promoting restful, deep sleep while also reducing cortisol levels and increasing nutrient assimilation -- all of which can improve performance, metabolism, and muscle protein synthesis. Sound like a dream? Come see us at Mid 10 and let us give you a sample!

The Science

Why We Need Quality Sleep

We are often guilty of challenging our bodies to accomplish as much as possible with as little sleep as possible. However, the effects of sleeplessness are more than just that groggy feeling we get in the middle of the day when our morning coffee wears off. Studies have correlated lack of sleep with higher body weight as well as increased appetite and risk for developing obesity [1,2]. For example, a long-term study comparing women who sleep 5 hours and women who sleep 7 to 8 hours has shown the group with less sleep to have significantly higher body weight than the group with normal amounts of sleep [1]. Other recent studies have also associated lack of sleep with changes in hormone levels. For example, these studies have found a correlation between low amounts of sleep and increased levels of Ghrelin, an appetite-inducing hormone produced in the stomach [3,4,5]. This may explain why another recent study found that we are significantly more likely to consume calorically dense and nutrient deficient foods after short-term decreases in sleep [6,7,8].

Not only do we need sleep in order to maintain a healthy weight and metabolism, we also need sleep in order to recover from the day-to-day stresses we place on our bodies. Training, in particular, causes a cortisol and catecholamine release, which breaks down our muscles. However, restful sleep strongly suppresses these catabolic processes and enhances peripheral anabolic processes (secretion of growth hormone and testosterone) [9].

Why Downtime PM?

Downtime PM has a unique blend of ingredients formulated to help you relax, fall asleep, and stay asleep. For example, a 2:1 ratio of Calcium to Magnesium in Downtime PM is intended to decrease anxiety before bed and aid in uninterrupted sleep.

Downtime PM’s "Biorhythm Blend" helps restore restore natural circadian rhythms and improve metabolic and digestive processes. A few of the ingredients in this blend include: Psyllium Husk Powder and Senna for improving digestion and regularity; Fenugreek Seed Extract for detoxification and nutrient assimilation; Digestive Enzymes to increase nutrient absorption; and Maca Root Extract for naturally restoring hormone levels.

In addition to the Biorhythm Blend, Downtime PM also has a "Somnovel Complex," with ingredients like Valerian Root and Kava Kava, which are specifically geared toward decreasing anxiety and encouraging deep sleep. Downtime PM also uses Melatonin, a naturally occurring compound that our body uses to regular circadian rhythms and elevate serotonin, therefore inducing restful sleep. Finally, Downtime PM has a high potency Black Cherry Extract, which has been shown to decrease inflammation and significantly increase sleep continuity.

Is Downtime PM Right for You?

Downtime PM uses all natural ingredients, something we highly recommend to help you sleep soundly without feeling groggy upon waking the next morning. If you are looking to boost your training performance and recovery while also improving anxiety, metabolism, and digestion, stop by and see us at Mid 10 for a sample!

This is where we will post both a brief and detailed review of two featured products each month. For November, those products are Alpha-Cre HD and Maximum Complex. Read on to learn more!

Alpha-Cre HD

THE SCOOP

If your goal is to improve performance, whether in the weight room, on the field, or on the pavement, the new Alpha-Cre HD by 1st Phorm is your perfect stimulant-free pre-workout for increasing strength and stamina! How does it work? By combining the highest quality micronized creatine monohydrate and beta alanine, allowing you to train both harder and longer. Plus, it comes in three delicious fruity flavors that will blend perfectly with your BCAAs: Grape, Orange, and Fruit Punch. Intrigued? Drop by Mid10 and mention this newsletter for your free sample!

THE SCIENCE

This is for those of you who like to know the juiciest details of how the products work, so you can have a leg-up on the competition!

The two ingredients primary ingredients in Alpha Cre HD are creatine monohydrate and beta-alanine. Creatine is naturally synthesized in the liver and pancreas from amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine [1].  It is considered an ergogenic (performance- enhancing) aid for athletes, and supplementation works by accelerating the rate of ATP resynthesis during workouts, increasing your power output and performance, and therefore increasing lean muscle [2].

Beta-alanine acts as a “muscle buffer” specifically geared toward resisting fatigue. Beta-alanine increases carnosine levels within the muscle helping to protect against the build-up of H+, the acidic byproduct of the breakdown of glycogen during exercise.  This rise in muscle carnosine maintains the proper pH balance among muscle cells, especially during intense workouts, when H+ concentration is the highest [3]. Creatine also contributes to this H+ buffer by making our bodies less dependent on glycogen for ATP resynthesis.

Combining creatine monohydrate and beta-alanine has been shown to have a greater effect on performance than stand-alone creatine or beta alanine products. A recent double-blind study on collegiate athletes compared a placebo group, creatine group, and a creatine +beta alanine group with the same 10-week strength training routine. Results showed significantly greater improvements in percent body fat, lean body mass, and total training volume in the creatine + beta alanine group in comparison to the other two groups. The creatine + beta alanine group also showed favorable upper- and lower-body strength changes in comparison to placebo [4].

According to 1st Phorm: “The double-tap of beta alanine and creatine in ALPHACre HD will increase aerobic capacity and endurance, as well as your anaerobic power output and overall strength levels, making it an ideal supplement for all types of athletes.” Here at Mid10, we agree that Alpha Cre’s versatility makes it a product which could assist a variety of training goals. If you are looking to increase strength and endurance during your workouts, Alpha Cre serves as a great non-stimulant workout enhancer. It can also be added to your favorite pre-workout for energy and improved performance, or runners and bikers can pair it with BCAA’s for the ultimate boost in endurance.  Still skeptical? Maximum Complex

THE SCOOP

Maximum Complex by Oz Nutrition is Mid10 Nutrition’s newest sustained-release, multi-source protein. With a blend of both fast- and slow- digesting types of protein, Maximum Complex is perfect for post-workout recovery and as a snack or meal replacement at any time of day. What makes Maximum Complex even more unique? It contains a complete vitamin and mineral complex as well as digestive enzymes shown to increase the rate of protein and amino acid absorption. Maximum Complex is also low calorie, low carb, and low fat, while remaining high in protein. In addition, every batch of Max Complex undergoes rigorous quality inspection, so what you see on the label is what you get! Maximum Complex comes in three delicious flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Strawberry – all of which we are happy to mix you a sample to taste when you come see us!

THE SCIENCE

Maximum Complex is a blended protein, which contains fast-acting whey isolate, whey concentrate, and slower-digesting egg albumen proteins. Whey protein has been shown to yield increased muscle protein synthesis [1]. Studies have also shown that groups using whey protein supplementation in combination with resistance training for ten weeks experienced significant lean mass increases and body fat decreases [2, 3].

You may now be wondering: why add the egg protein to the whey? Egg whites contain many proteins, mostly ovalbumin, which makes up about 60 percent of the total protein; ovotransferrin, which makes up around 10 percent; and ovomucin at around 5 percent. [4]. Egg protein, therefore, has a full spectrum of available amino acids, making it a perfectly “complete” protein. The addition of egg albumen protein to whey protein can keep you in an anabolic state (forming muscle proteins from amino acids) by keeping blood amino levels high for longer periods of time than whey protein alone. These slower digesting proteins also make Maximum Complex ideal as a snack or meal replacement, as it will keep you full between meals.
Maximum complex contains more than high quality protein, however. It also contains 25% of your daily value of many essential vitamins and minerals in just one scoop. In addition, Maximum Complex utilizes  the unique Aminogen Digestive Enzyme System. Aminogen is a patended blend of digestive proteases from Aspergillus niger and Alpergillus oryzae that was shown in a published clinical study to triple the rate of protein absorption. Because Aminogen helps to break down protein, many find it reduces or eliminates symptoms of incomplete protein digestion, such as gas and bloating. [5]

Getting an adequate amount of protein in your diet is important for feeling and looking our best. [6] Maximum Complex offers versatility to anyone wanting to supplement dietary protein throughout the day without added fats and sugars. Plus, its full spectrum of vitamins, minerals, and Aminogen digestive enzymes puts Maximum Complex a notch above many other protein blends. Not to mention, it tastes phenomenal! Come see us at Mid10 and try a free sample for yourself!
